Gachagua Hospitalized Amidst Political Turmoil: Impeachment Trial Continues Despite Health Scare
Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua was rushed to Karen Hospital in Nairobi after suffering severe chest pains just hours before he was set to defend himself in a critical Senate impeachment trial. Gachagua’s chief cardiologist, Dr. Dan Gikonyo, reported that after a series of diagnostic tests, his condition stabilized, though he remains under close observation for at least 48 to 72 hours. The sudden illness prompted his legal team, led by lawyer Paul Muite, to request a delay in the Senate proceedings, citing the need for the Deputy President to rest and recover fully.
Despite the medical appeal, the Senate pushed forward with the impeachment hearing, rejecting requests for adjournment. Gachagua, facing serious allegations including corruption and promoting ethnic division, had planned to personally defend his position but was unable to due to his health. His lawyers insisted that postponing the trial would not only be fair but also constitutionally sound, while opposition lawyers argued that the process could proceed in his absence with legal representation.
Gachagua’s sudden illness has fueled speculation, with some questioning the timing, as he fell ill just before taking the stand. However, Dr. Gikonyo clarified that the Deputy President’s symptoms were genuine, possibly triggered by stress, and required immediate medical attention.
