Cameroon Overpowers Kenya: Tactical Missteps and Defensive Woes in AFCON Qualifier

Kenya’s Harambee Stars suffered a punishing 4-1 defeat at the hands of Cameroon in their third Group J match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers. The game, held at the Japoma Stadium in Douala, highlighted several tactical and defensive flaws that Kenya must address to revive their qualification hopes.

Cameroon struck early, with Vincent Aboubakar converting an 8th-minute penalty after a handball by Erick Ouma. Despite Kenya showing brief moments of resilience, notably through Michael Olunga’s goal just before halftime, Cameroon quickly regained control. Goals from Martin Hongla, Bryan Mbeumo, and Christian Bassogog ensured a comfortable win for the Indomitable Lions.

The loss has raised concerns over coach Engin Firat’s tactical choices, especially the deployment of Amos Nondi in an unfamiliar right-back position. Kenya’s defense struggled to contain Cameroon’s relentless attacks, with Nondi being substituted at halftime after a torrid first half.

While Kenya managed to stay composed in parts of the game, their 39% possession and lack of shots on target underscored the need for better midfield control and attacking precision. Firat now faces the challenge of reorganizing his squad for their upcoming clash with Uganda.

This result leaves Kenya in a precarious position, needing a significant turnaround to keep their AFCON hopes alive.
