Kenyan Teachers Set for Nationwide Strike Over Unmet Demands and Delayed Reforms

KUPPET and KNUT have jointly declared a nationwide teachers’ strike set to begin on August 26, 2024. The action comes in response to long-standing issues, including late payments and the government’s failure to uphold critical elements of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).

Having tried every avenue to resolve these matters through dialogue, the unions have now escalated the situation by filing a labor dispute.

Although the government has taken some steps, like allocating additional education funds, KUPPET and KNUT argue that their main concerns remain unresolved. As a result, the unions are pressing forward with their planned strike.

Teachers are also protesting the lack of progress on key promises, such as salary increases, the permanent employment of 46,000 junior secondary school interns, and the recruitment of 20,000 additional educators.
