KUPPET Demands Critical Reforms to Avert Nationwide Teachers’ Strike
The Kenya Union of Post Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) has issued several demands that must be fulfilled to prevent a nationwide strike scheduled for August 26, 2024. Key among their grievances is the delayed implementation of the 2021-2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), which promises salary increments between 2.5% and 9%, as well as improved housing allowances and better working conditions.
Additionally, KUPPET is pushing for the permanent confirmation of 46,000 Junior Secondary School (JSS) teachers currently working on contract and is calling for the hiring of 20,000 new teachers to address staffing shortages. Another crucial demand is the need for regular promotions, as many teachers have been stuck in the same roles for over a decade without opportunities for advancement.
The union is also seeking assurance that teachers’ medical coverage will not be compromised by government budget cuts. Furthermore, KUPPET demands compensation for deductions imposed by the recently introduced Housing Levy. Without the fulfillment of these demands, the strike is expected to significantly disrupt the education sector, especially as national exams approach.
